Homemade Root
Beer and Soda
Root Beer and other flavors of soda can be produced with very simple and cost efficient
equipment and ingredients. It's a fun way to get the whole family involved.
Each soda kit contains step by step instructions to making some of the best soda around.
Equipment needed:
5 gallon plastic pail (food grade)
Long handle spoon
Racking cane, 5' ft. of 3/8" tubing
bottle filler
bottles and caps
Ingredients:
4 gallons of lukewarm water (98-110 F)
1 bottle of extract (your choice of flavor)
8 cups of sugar
1 packet of champagne yeast.
Process:
1. Dissolve yeast in a cup of warm water (98 F). Let stand for 5 minutes or longer to
dissolve, mix thoroughly before adding.
2. Shake the bottle of extract well. Combine Homebrew extract and sugar in sufficient warm
water to dissolve sugar. (use warm tap water)
3. Now add yeast mixture. Add warm water to bring level of liquid up to 4 gallons.
4. Mixture can be tasted. More sugar may be added to suit your taste.
5. Fill sterilized bottles within 1 to 2 inches of top. Depending on the type of bottles
used, seal with hand capper or resealable caps. Bottles not sealed properly my become flat
or sour.
6. Lay bottles on side to check for leaks. Age 3 to 4 days at room temperature. Then store
in a cool, dark place. Total aging at least 10 days. (aging improves flavor) As natural
carbonation takes place, a slight yeast deposit will form on the bottom. When serving,
pour carefully as to leave most of the yeast deposit. This is not harmful in any way, but
sometimes gives an off flavor. Refrigerate Before Opening.
